Ayushya Homa is usually performed on the occasion of ones Birthday for a long and healthy life. It bestows long life, good health - physical, mental and spiritual and relief from mental trauma. Rishi Markandeya, who was the son of Saint Mrukandu, was destined to die at the tender age of sixteen. On the last day of his life, Markandeya prayed to Lord Shiva and embraced the shivalinga. He chanted the sacred Mrityunjaya Stotram praying for Lord Shiva to protect his life. When Yama tried to throw the noose around Markandeya’s neck, the noose also enveloped the linga and Lord Yama, the Lord of Death, found himself fighting for His life! Lord Shiva then spared Yamas life on the condition that His devotee - Markandeya would also be spared. The subtle energies of the Ayushya Homa, invoke the eternal consciousness - the Shiva - within each one of us and enables us to recognize the undying and ever pure nature of consciousness. For a sadhaka, it is considered doubly auspicious to participate in the Ayushya Homa - Recognizing the Eternal Consciousness Enhancing the medium (the body) which enables us to live a spiritual life
