9 - Karnavedhan Samskara

Karnavedhan is the ninth of the 16 Samskaras of Vaidic Tradition. Karna means ear and vedhan means to pierce. It is an ear piercing ceremony. It is believed that performance of Karnavedhan as important as Upanayanam, the sacred thread ceremony.

Piercing ears is believed to help in developing intelligence. It has a unique value when performed on both male and female child. However, in current times, Karnavedhan, has become an uncommon practice amongst males.

The ceremony also has another aspect to it. With the commencement of Surya Puja, the father addresses the right ear of the child while chanting the mantra associated with this ceremony. This is performed as a blessing so that child listens to good things.
