UPAKARMA

9 August 2025 | 6:30 AM

Upākarma is an annual sacred ritual observed by followers of the Vedic tradition, especially those who have undergone the Upanayanam (Sacred Thread Ceremony). It involves the renewal of the Yajnopavita (sacred thread), chanting of Vedic mantras, and offerings to the Rishis — the ancient seers of knowledge.

It is a time to reconnect with one’s spiritual roots and reinforce commitment to the path of knowledge and dharma.

Usually observed in the month of Shravana (July–August), on Shravana Purnima (Full Moon Day), the day is significant across India:

  • Coincides with Raksha Bandhan in North and Central India
  • Falls close to Onam in Kerala
  • Followed by the recitation of the Gayatri Mantra 1008 times, a deeply purifying and empowering practice.

Significance of Upākarma

  • Renewal of Commitment: Reaffirm one’s vow to pursue knowledge and spiritual discipline.
  • Gratitude to Rishis: Offerings made in remembrance of the Rishis and their timeless contributions to humanity.
  • Chanting of Gayatri Mantra: Reciting the mantra 1008 times invokes inner clarity, energy, and protection.

 Who Can Perform Upākarma?
