Upanayanam is one of the most important Samskārās. “Upa” means ‘close’ and “Nayanam” means ‘to bring’. Upanayanam means to bring closer to the Guru or Divine. Upanayanam also known as the ‘sacred thread ceremony’ is performed to mark the commencement of formal education in the Vaidic tradition. During Upanayana, The Great Gayatri Mantra is imparted to the Brachmachari as it is considered as the greatest of all upadesams and is called “Brahmopadesam”. And in Upanayanam, they usually put a thread on you and the thread is to signify that you have a responsibility towards the knowledge, towards your parents and towards society. So it signifies carrying your responsibilities on the shoulders. It is said that practice of Gayatri mantra cultivates a quiet mind, sharp intellect and increases the amount of creativity and productivity.

Special Notes

Upanayanam Guidelines

1. Orientation for the program starts one day before at 7.30 pm in ashram
2. Upanayan Program timing : 6.00 AM - 6.00 PM
3. Upanayan kit to be collected at the VDS office on Orientation day.

5. Kindly register for the Upanayanam program with your whatsapp number.
6. Pregnant women and women in their monthly cycle cannot participate in the Upanyanam program.
7. Women should carry a blouse to match the yellow saree which they have to wear on initiation day.
8. Collect your name tag from the Ashram Reception by showing your registration receipt.
9. All ashram Covid-19 related guidelines with respect to social distancing, wearing mask, exit, entry shall be applicable.
